Edward Carroll was born at Hartlepool in 1890, to parents Peter and Elizabeth Mary Carroll (nee Gillespy).
The 1901 Census shows Peter (a Boilermaker), Elizabeth and five children - Edward (aged 11), John (9), Alice (5), William (3), and Margaret (1), living with her widowed father at No.25, William Street, Hartlepool.
The 1911 Census shows Peter and Elizabeth and their children, now joined by siblings Elizabeth (aged 6), Catherine (4) and new-born Annie, living at No.17, Prissick Street, Hartlepool. Also in the household at this time is Elizabeth's brother, John Henry Gillespie (Gilhespie)
The family were still at this address at the time of Edward's loss.
