John Garland was born at West Hartlepool in 1883, to parents Michael (born in Ireland), and Mary Garland (nee Donnelly or Dorally), who were married at Hartlepool towards the end of 1876.
The 1891 Census shows John living at No.14, Ann Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, with his grandfather Martin Dorally (born Ireland, 1861), father Michael, brother Patrick (aged 12), and sisters Margaret (11), and Mary Ann (8).
The 1911 Census shows John living as a boarder at No.27, Lamb Street, West Hartlepool, with an occupation as a Shipyard Rivetter.
At some point John married Florence Davies, their address being given as No.2, West Street, West Hartlepool.
