Frederick James English was the son of Joseph Catton English born c 1845 at Stamford Bridge , Yorkshire and probably Mary Wilson who married on the 31^stAugust 1870 at St. Peter’s Leeds . Joseph and Mary’s first children Ann and Francis were was born in Leeds .Frederick 's birth was registered in the March qtr of 1880 in Hartlepool . He was registered as just Frederick English. From St. Aidan’s School Admission Register he was born on the 2^nd January 1880.

In 1881, the family were at Tunbridge Terrace Stranton (probably part of Studley Rd) father Joseph was a 36 year old tallow chandler, wife Mary was 33  and there were 5 boys and a girl, all but the first two born in West Hartlepool.

Mother Mary appears to have died in 1887 aged 40 and is buried in North Cemetery with son John aged 9 who died in 1888. The address was Studley Rd.

By 1891 the family were at 4 Hill Terrace, Stranton

 Joseph had a new wife, Elizabeth aged 25 born West Hartlepool, Durham

Children from his first marriage still living at home are Francis, a Warehouseman, Henry, a Clerk (Timber Merchant), Thomas, a Grocers Assistant Frederick and 9 year old Joseph,scholars. Children to his new wife Elizabeth are, Wilfred age 1 and Percy under 1 month, all born West Hartlepool, Durham. Also at the address is Elizabeth Heslop, Servant, Nurse, age 12.

Frederick English married Maggie Storer in the June qtr 1910 in Hartlepool at St. James Church and in 1911 was living at 18 Elliott Street, West Hartlepool with an uncle, William Haigh a 67 year old joiner from Pocklington and his wife of a year Margaret. Frederick's occupation was Steamship Cook.

 Frederick was a Steward on the SS Saxon when it was sunk on the 7^th May 1918. The Deaths at Sea records show his address as 2a Richmond Street, West Hartlepool .
