Lost on the steamship Whorlton, of West Hartlepool.
Robert Oxley was born in Scarborough in 1850, to parents Joseph and Sarah Oxley.
The 1881 Census shows Robert as Mate on what appeasrs to be the vessel Runo, a small sailing vessel owned by M. Storm, of Whitby.
The 1901 Census shows Robert and his Scarborough-born wife Louisa Oxley, living at No.97, Burbank Street, West Hartlepool, with three children; Frederick (aged 11), Ernest (6), and Herbert, aged 7-months.
The family were still living at this address in 1901, with the addition of a daughter, Irene, aged 8. Both Irene and her older brother Herbert were born in West Hartlepool. Robert does not appear on this Census, presumably being away at sea.
