Albert William Bate was born on 26th April 1896 in Middlesbrough and was baptised at St Hilda's Middlesbrough on 17th May 1898.
He was the son of James William and Mary Jane Bate, nee Riddle, who had been married in Middlesbrough in 1897. James was from North Ormesby near Middlesbrough and Mary from Middlesbrough. In 1901 when Albert William was 2, they were in Colne St Middlesbrough and James was a pipe moulder in the steel works.
Around 1904, they moved to 27 Faulder Road West Hartlepool. St Aidan's School admission book shows that Albert joined the school in 1906. By the 1911 census at 8 Faulder Rd, James was a blast furnace labourer and, at 12, Albert was a grocer's boy. There were three more children.
Albert lost his life on HMS Invincible during the Battle of Jutland on the last day of May 1916 and his parents were informed of their son's death.
