Patrick Moran was the son of Irishman Thomas Moran, an agricultural labourer, and his wife Catherine Moran, nee McKale from Leeds,Yorkshire. (Naval Death Records have his birth as 1893 but this should possibly be 1873 as all other records fit with this date)
Patrick was born in Clifford near Leeds and in 1891 was living with his parents and four siblings in Bramham with Oglethorpe Yks. By 1901 he was living with his sister by then Mary Chambers in Bramham and by 1911 was a boarder in the home of Arthur Bailey in Garforth near Leeds working as a hewer in the coal mine.
He must at some point have found his way to Hartlepool where in 1915 he married Ellen Conway.
Patrick was a stoker on HMS Invincible when during the Battle of Jutland, the ship was fired at by the German ships Lutzow and Defflinger and sunk within 90 seconds with a loss of 1026 men.
His wife Ellen was informed of his death at her Cleveland Street home. Patrick's name is on the Chatham Memorial.
