George Clark was lost on the hired yacht HMS Kethailes when it sunk in October 1917 in St George's Channel. He was a Navy Lieutenant.
George had been born into a seafaring family and was brought up in Clifton Ave in Hartlepool which was, and to some extent still is, an affluent area of the town. He was one of 8 children of Robert Dawson Clark, a Runswick born Master Mariner, and his Middlesbrough born wife Jane ,nee Bedlington. The couple had married in Hartlepool in 1873. Jane had been brought to the town by her parents in the late 1850s and her father was also a Master Mariner.
George's father was away at sea in 1881, 1891 and 1901 but in 1881, Jane's widowed mother, Jane Bedlington, was living with them and they also had a servant.
