Edward Morrigan was lost on HMS Vanguard in Scapa Flow, Orkney in July 1917, following a devastating internal explosion. R.N.R. Service No.6641S.
Edward was born on 16th September 1898, probably the last of the eleven children of bricklayer's labourer William Morrigan and his wife Maria (nee Solan). William was from Dudley, Warwickshire and his wife from Galway, Ireland. They married in St. Wilfred's R.C. Church in Bishop Auckland on 10th May, 1873.
The couple appear to have had at least 11 children, four of them sadly dying in childhood. Their first five children are known to have been born in Bishop Auckland and three of the youngest in West Hartlepool.
The 1911 Census shows William (a Brick Layer's Labourer, aged 60), and Maria (House Keeper, aged 60), living at No.39, Caroline Street, West Hartlepool, with sons Thomas (a General Labourer, aged 23, single), Edward (aged 12, at school), daughters Catherine (Laundry Maid, aged 21, single), and Maria (Laundry Maid, aged 19, single), together with grand-daughter Annie Melvin (aged 6). Also in the house at this time are a number of "visitors", three coal miners and a female Laundry Assistant - some 11 people living in just three rooms.
When Edward died at 18 years of age, his mother Maria, had just weeks before lost her husband Willliam.
He is remembered on the Chatham Memorial.
