Lost on the steam trawler Doris Burton.
Hugh Hawthorn was born at Bangor, Co. Down, Ireland, in 1876, the son of John and Rose Ann Hawthorn.
The 1881 Census shows John (a General Labourer), and Rose living at No.5, Dock Street, Hartlepool, with their five children, all except Margaret born in Ireland; Hugh (aged 5), John (3), and Margaret (1, born in Hartlepool). Also living in the house at this time is John's brother, Hugh.
The 1891 Census shows the family having moved to No.2, Back Warren Terrace, and with the addition of three more children; Minnie (aged 6), James (4), and Herbert (1). Both John and his son Hugh (now aged 15), are listed as a Cement Works Labourers. John's brother Hugh is no longer in the household.
The 1901 Census shows the family now living at No.22, Hart Road/Warren Terrace, although Margaret is no longer in the household. John and Hugh are both still Cement Works Labourers, John junior is a Bricklayer and Minnie a Dressmaker.
It appears Hugh was living at the family home at the time of his death.
