Fate

The steamship Elba was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-103 some 6 miles north-west of the Pendeen Light, on April 28th, 1918. The ship was on a voyage from Cardiff to an unknown destination.

Ten of the crew were lost including James Watchman of West Hartlepool.

The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Carolus, Christopher; Falk, Jons; Kaptalos, Phillipinos; Mansfield, Daniel; McPherson, George; Murray, Norman; Ross, Alexander Duffin; Toulson, Frederick; Wards, William.
