Fate

The West Hartlepool-registered steamship Atlas was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-71 (Walter Warzecha), 10 miles east of Hartlepool on February 14th, 1918. The ship was on a voyage from Murmansk to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore, and had left Selbjorns Fjord on the 12th as part of Convoy HZ8. No lives were lost. Master M.J. Mathersdale.
