Fate

The steamship Mary Baird sank off Pendeen, Cornwall, on 18th May, 1917, after striking a mine laid by UC-47 (Paul Hundius) the previous day. The ship was on a voyage from Rouen to Newport in ballast. Master - R.W.P. Smith.

One of the lifeboats was hit by falling debris as it was being launched killing seven of the crew including West Hartlepool-born 2nd Engineer Robert Storey.

The other sixmen who lost their lives were: Campilla, Gabriel Antonio; Clucas, William Henry; Economo, Michael; Power, Richard; Urresti, Lucio Angelo; Vincent, Albert Benjamin.
