In convoy OS-28 on a voyage from Greenock for Freetown, Sierra Leone in ballast with 64 persons on board, Montenol was torpedoed & scuttled by German submarine U-159 (Helmut Witte) 126 miles ESE of Santa Maria Island, Azores on 21 May 1942. Sources state three lives lost but Roll of Honour for the Royal Fleet Auxilary Service has four names listed.
