On a voyage from Blyth for Halmstead, Sweden with a cargo of coal & a crew of 20 Liana was torpedoed by German submarine U14 (Herbert Wohlfarth) & sank 24 miles north of Kinnaird Head on 16 February 1940. 8 survivors were picked up by the Santos which was then sunk on 24 February with the loss of 6 of the survivors from Liana. 10 lives lost in first attack; 6 lives lost in second attack.
