Brief notes - Manchester DivisionExtract from Sea Breezws, No.122, February 1956:
Captain E.W.C. Beggs was in command of the Manchester Division on her maiden voyage to join a convoy off Plymouth during the First World War, when a German submarine was sighted preparing to launch an attack on the convoy. Without hesitation, Capt. Beggs gave orders to ram the submarine amidships. The U-boat's steel aerial was later found wrapped around the Manchester Division's propellor.
