On a voyage from Oslo Garoufalia had unloaded her cargo of corn at Trondheim & was bound for Kirkenes in ballast to collect a cargo of ore. With a crew of 27 & 2 Norwegian pilots she was torpedoed by German submarine (U-38 Heinrich Liebe) & sank off Folla in Norwegian waters on 11 December 1939. 25 survivors, of which 7 were injured, were picked up by Norwegian steamer Tellus. 2 of the injured later died. 4 lives lost.
